As the United States approaches its 250th anniversary, it is worth noting that the road to independence ran through a much wider world than the one most of us were taught. The war unfolded within a much larger conflict that drew in France and Spain and was fought across the Americas—from the Gulf Coast to the Caribbean—as well as the wider Atlantic world.
That wider conflict included a diverse range of participants that haven’t always been featured in the history books.
